This is not "just a pencil".
The original Blackwing 602 pencil gathered a cult following, and was a favorite of many famous animators, authors, musicians, and so much more. Chuck Jones loved his, John Steinbeck couldn't write without them, and it was even a favorite of record producer Quincy Jones.
The key to the success of this pencil was two-fold. First, the lead had a wax additive that made it incredibly soft and smooth to write with. Many describe it as a "creamy" writing feeling. Second, the eraser is blade-shaped and could be replaced easily thanks to some specially designed clips that held it in place. Production of the Blackwing ceased in 1998 after it was decided that it was not commercially successful enough to continue.
Thankfully, a company called California Cedar is manufacturing reproduction Blackwings that are every bit as pleasing to use as the original. The creamy smooth lead, the unique eraser, and the comfortable hexagonal shape... it's all there. This is the best pencil money can buy.
